1. Kings Kloof Trails

A waterfall hiking route in Gauteng that only takes a few hours. A lovely route on relatively flat terrain, with some steep climbs during the end.

  • Location: Kings Kloof Trails, Muldersdrift, 1794
  • Cost: R50 per person*
  • Operating Hours:
    • Saturday and Sunday: 6h30 to 15h00
    • Week: Closed during the week, open during some public holidays.
  • Routes available: 6 km, 12 km, 16 – 21km, 32 km
  • Refreshments are available to purchase on site with a tuck shop.
  • Not pet friendly.

2. Cradle Moon Hike

The trail is well-marked, covering mostly flat terrain with a slight incline and descent toward the end of the hike. Opting for the 9km route, we thoroughly enjoyed the scenery as the trail curved along the Krokodil River. We were delighted to spot zebras, giraffes, impalas, and even rhinos from the neighboring property.

  • Location: Cradle Moon Lakeside Lodge, Plot 59 Beyers Naude Drive, Muldersdrift, 2024
  • Activities & Costs: Mountain Biking (R80 pp), Trail Running (R80 pp), Hiking (R80 pp), and Bike hire (R500 per bike)* – all activity rates include the R50 conservation fee.
  • Restaurant & Bar: They have an on-site restaurant & bar overlooking the river to grab a bite after your hike or cycle.
  • Good to know: They do not allow external food or beverages on their premises.
  • Not pet friendly.
3. Hennops River Hiking

The Hennops hiking route crosses the Hennops river on several occasions making for a scenic hike along the river beds. There are several hiking routes available perfect to suit your needs.

  • Location: On the R511 road, Pretoria, 0001. Easily found on Google Maps by searching Hennops Hiking Trail
  • Operating Hours:
    • Weekdays: 07h00 – 13h00
    • Weekends and Public Holidays:
      • October – March: 06h00 – 13h00
      • April – September: 07h00 – 13h00
    • Facilities Close at 17h00
  • Cost: R100 pp*
  • Hiking Trails:
    • Dasie trail (2km)
    • Zebra trail (5km)
    • Krokodilberg trail (10km)
  • No pets or alcohol allowed.
4. Wolwespruit Hike

Finding unique spots close to home can be difficult, especially places you’ll want to revisit time and time again. Wolwespruit is an amazing location with a vibrant community over the weekends.

  • Location: Wolwespruit Bike & Trail Park, 501 Jochemus St, Erasmuskloof, Pretoria, 0048
  • Cost: R45 per person*
  • Operating Hours: The park & trails are open 365 days of the year, including all public holidays
    • Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday: 5h30 to 18h30
    • Tuesday: 5h30 to 21h00
    • Saturday, Sunday: 6h00 to 18h00
  • Routes available: 5 km, 6.5 km, and 10 km
  • Refreshments are available to purchase on site with a lovely restaurant as well.

5. The Big Red Barn

With over 60 different species of birds and various reptiles in their peaceful gardens it is a must do activity to escape the city noises. The entrance costs range from R 45 – R 105 per adult and R70 for children. Discount are available for rewards card holders and larger groups We would advise to check their website to see if you qualify for a discount.

Ground offers lovely hiking trails in the mountains for you to enjoy with family, friends, and your pets.

  • Cost: R 60 per person*
  • Routes Available: 4km to 9 km
  • Operating Hours:
    • Wednesday – Friday: 08h00 to 15h00
    • Saturday-Sunday: 06h30 to 11h30

8. Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve

A Nationally proclaimed Nature Reserve that have hiking trails, with free admission to the reserve.

  • Location: Nature Reserve in Pretoria- Helios St, Moreletapark, Pretoria, 0044

  • Routes Available: 1.5 to 4.6 km
  • Operating Hours:
    • Monday – Sunday: 06h00 to 18h00
